Effect of Fluid Administration during The Period of Preoperative Starvation on Surgical Patients

Abstract
In 24 surgical patients, serum and urine osmolalities were measured pre and postoperatively and compared with control.* Free water clearance was checked concomitantly.
The group of patients received no fluid preoperatively showed marked decrease of urine osmolality and of sodium excretion postoperatively. The group of patients received fluid preop-eratively showed little change of urine osmolality and sodium excretion.
The value of free water clearance in the group received no fluid was, positive, suggesting antecedent acute renal failure. And the value of free water clearance in the groups received fluid was negative, meaning good renal function.
We concluded that preoperative administration of the fluid could control the urine osmolality and support the renal function postoperatively.
